- WILLIE CARDNO was born in 1904 at 16 North Street. Fraserburgh, the house where he still resides. He vas the second youngest of a family of five, and son of the late Mr Wulsie Cardno. a gentleman of considerable knowledge and ability.
He went to the Infant School, the Central School and the Academy.
At the age of 15, he left the Academy and went to sea as an apprentice fisherman aboard the drifter Duthies. He became skipper at the age of 23 in 1927, and his first command was the steam drilter Emblem.
He joined the Royal Naval Reserve in 1939 and served throughout the war as a Skipper Lieutenant aboard minesweepers. He was mentioned in despatches,
He married Miss Jessie Noble who died in 1957.
She was the daughter of a fisherman. Skipper Cardno has two of a family, Charlotte and Betty, who are both married. After the war Skipper Cardno commanded the steam drifter Cornucopia, until he built the motor boat Cornucopia. He sold the Cornucopia in 1963 and retired from active fishing, after 12 vears.
He is chairman of the Fraserburgh branch of the Scottish Herring Producers’ Association and has been a member of the Harbour Board since 1949.
He is a member of Masonic Lodge Fraserburgh No. 1955, In 1955 Skipper Cardno had the, distinction of winning the Maitland Trophy with his motor fishing boat Cornucopia when he landed 233 crans of herring the biggest landing in the Maitland Trophy competition.
